Flash estimate – In June 2022, the Autonomous Region of Madeira had the best month ever in guests and overnight stays
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of June 2022 shows that 177.7 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 948.7 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +143.8% and +158.3%, respectively. Compared to June 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 34.1% and 23.1%.
It should also be noted that the above values of overnight stays and overnight guests, for June 2022, are the highest ever, surpassing the values for August 2021 and August 2017, respectively.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, there was an increase of 159.0%, a sharper change than the one recorded at a national level (+110,2%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 51.0% year-on-year, reaching 211.4 thousand and representing 22.3% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 224.4% compared to June 2021, standing at 737.3 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to June 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +81.4% and the residents abroad were 12.8%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in June 2022, was estimated at 55.1 thousand and the foreign guests at 122.6 thousand.
In the country, in June 2022, the domestic market contributed with 2.3 million overnight stays (+16,5%) and the external markets totalled 4.8 million (+241.8% compared to June 2021).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 77.7% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 187.5 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 181.9 thousand and France with 67.0 thousand.
In June of 2022, 11.1% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 92.5% of the establishments with a guest flow (91,8% in May 2022).

The detailed results for June 2022 will be released on August 16th of 2022.
