Flash estimate - In April 2023, tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded over 900,000 overnight stays, marking the first time this milestone has been reached in that particular month
According to the flash estimate for April 2023 the tourist accommodation sector in the Region recorded 188.8 thousand guests, which are expected to have generated 923.4 thousand overnight stays. This represents year-on-year changes of +11.6% and +10.9%, respectively. Compared to April 2019, there were increases of 51.2% and 38.5% in the same order.
In the first four months of the year, overnight stays exceeded 3.2 million, an increase of 37.9% compared to the same period in the previous year.
To ensure comparability with the data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. According to this approach, tourist overnight stays in April 2023 showed a year-on-year increase of 6.3%, which is lower than the national level (+13.8%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents in Portugal grew by 14.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching 180.5 thousand (19.6% of the total), while overnight stays by non-residents increased by 10.1%, totalling 742.9 thousand. It should be noted that compared to April 2019, the change in overnight stays by residents in Portugal was +141.4%, while for non-residents it was +25.5%. The number of guests from Portugal in April 2023 totalled 50.0 thousand, while guests from abroad reached 138.8 thousand.
In the country, in April 2023, the domestic market contributed 2.0 million overnight stays, an increase of 7.3%. The foreign markets predominated (accounting for 70.2% of the total) and totalled 4.8 million overnight stays (+16.8%).

The initial estimated data for the reference month in the Region shows that the main source markets of foreign residents accounted for 80.4% of the total overnight stays. Among them, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays in April 2023, with approximately 192.3 thousand (+1.9% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom with 145.7 thousand (-5.4%), and France with 86.9 thousand (+19.2%).
In April 2023, 8.6% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not record guest movement.
