DREM releases final results of the Tourism Statistics for the year 2022 and updates the corresponding Time Series (1976-2022)

The Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) has today made available on its website the publication of the final results of the Tourism Statistics for 2022. This publication provides an analysis of the main results, from which the following key points are extracted, summarizing the sector's evolution in the year under review:

Accommodation establishments (total)

- In 2022, the total number of overnight stays in various types of tourist accommodations, including hotels, rural tourism, , local accommodation, time-sharing, holiday camps, and youth hostels, surpassed 9.8 million. This marked a substantial growth of 94.2% compared to 2021 and an increase of 16.1% compared to 2019. The number of overnight stays by residents of Portugal reached approximately 1.7 million in 2022, showing an increase of 41.3% compared to 2021. Non-resident foreigners accounted for around 8.1 million overnight stays, reflecting a surge of 111.1% compared to the previous year.

Tourism accommodation establishments

- The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation, including hotels, rural tourism, and local accommodation, surpassed 9.6 million in 2022. This represented a significant increase of 92.9% compared to 2021 and a growth of 18.4% compared to 2019.

- Residents of Portugal accounted for approximately 1.7 million overnight stays, showing an increase of 40.6% compared to 2021. The Portuguese market ranked as the third most important, following the British and German markets, and accounted for 17.8% of the total overnight stays.

- Non-resident foreigners contributed to approximately 7.9 million overnight stays, accounting for 82.2% of the total. This represents an increase of 109.8% compared to the previous year. The main source markets for non-resident foreigners were the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Denmark, which together accounted for 77.2% of the overnight stays by non-resident foreigners.

- The annual net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with less than 10 beds) reached 61.5%, marking an increase of 17.0 percentage points (pp) compared to 2021 and 3.5 pp compared to 2019. Similarly, the room occupancy rate stood at 70.7%, showing a substantial increase of 21.0 pp compared to 2021 and 6.3 pp compared to 2019.

- The average length of stay in tourist accommodation in Madeira was 4.80 nights, slightly lower than the previous year's figure of 4.86 nights.

- The Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR), which measures the revenue obtained per available room, reached 59.84 euros in 2022 in tourist accommodation establishments (excluding local accommodation with less than 10 beds), marking an increase of 54.0% compared to 2021 and 35.1% compared to 2019.

- The Average Daily Rate (ADR) per room in tourist accommodation establishments (excluding local accommodation with less than 10 beds) was approximately 84.66 euros in 2022, reflecting an increase of 8.3% compared to the previous year.

Hotels

- Hotels recorded approximately 7.5 million overnight stays in 2022, reflecting a growth of 91.7% compared to 2021 (+10.8% compared to 2019) and accounting for 77.6% of collective tourist accommodation.

- Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in this segment experienced increases by 99.6% and 103.9%, respectively, compared to 2021, and by 29.2% and 35.2%, respectively, compared to 2019.

- Overnight stays by non-resident foreign visitors surpassed 6.1 million (82.2% of total hotel stays), marking a growth of 110.5% compared to the previous year. The United Kingdom emerged as the main market accounting for 24.2% of the total, followed by Germany with a share of 19.4%. In terms of growth, the German market exhibited the highest increase compared to 2021, with a growth of +144.7%, while the British market experienced an increase of 105.5%.

- Residents in Portugal contributed to 1.3 million overnight stays (+35.7% compared to 2021), representing 17.8% of the total hotel stays. The Portuguese market ranked as the third most important in this segment, following the British and German markets.

- The annual bed occupancy rate reached 64.0%, showing an increase of 16.5 pp compared to 2021 and 2.1 pp compared to 2019. Similarly, the room occupancy rate stood at 73.2%, marking a significant increase of 20.8 pp compared to 2021 and 5.3 pp compared to 2019.

- The average length of stay in this segment was 4.87 nights, showing a slight decrease compared to the previous year (4.89 nights).

- The average annual revenue per room (RevPAR) was 63.80 euros in 2022 reflecting an increase of 50.4% compared to 2021. The Average Daily Rate (ADR) per room reached 87.11 euros, showing a growth of 7.7%. Compared to 2019, RevPAR increased by 33.4% and ADR by 23.9%.

Rural tourism

- In 2022, the average number of operating establishments in rural tourism was 58, generating 213.5 thousand overnight stays. This represents an increase of 66.2% compared to 2021 and 35.0% compared to 2019.

Local accommodation

- In local accommodation units, there were 380.4 thousand registered guest arrivals reflecting a significant increase of 115.6% compared to 2021. These arrivals resulted in over 1.9 million overnight stays, representing a growth of 101.3% compared to 2021 and 57.9% compared to 2019.

Time-sharing

- In this segment, there were 59.8 thousand guest arrivals, reflecting a substantial increase of 131.1% compared to 2021. The number of overnight stays stood at 622.9 thousand, representing a significant growth of 130.3% compared to 2021 and a slight decrease of 0.3% compared to 2019.

- It is important to note that approximately 69.4% of the guest arrivals and 68.4% of the overnight stays in this segment are already included in the hotel data. This is because all time-sharing establishments categorized as "touristic housing" are accounted for in the Survey on Guest Stays in Hotels and other Accommodations.

Other types of collective tourist accommodation

- In 2022, holiday camps and youth hostels recorded a total of 28.4 thousand overnight stays, which reflects an increase of 129.4% compared to 2021 and 19.7% compared to 2019. The Portuguese market accounted for 70.5% of the total overnight stays, showing a significant increase of 119.1% compared to 2021.

Golf in Madeira

- According to the Golf Course Survey, in 2022, the three golf courses in Madeira recorded a total of 69,288 rounds played, which represents an increase of 51.9% compared to 2021 and 6.0% compared to 2019. These rounds generated approximately 3.1 million euros in revenue.

Passenger movement in cruise ships

- In the region, based on data provided by the Administration of the Ports of Madeira, there were 323 cruise ships that entered the region in 2022. This represents an increase of 198 compared to 2021 and 25 compared to 2019. These cruise ships brought a total of 410.3 thousand transit passengers, which is a significant increase of 260.5% compared to 2021, but a decrease of 30.3% compared to 2019. It's worth noting that 90.4% of this movement occurred in the 1st and 3rd quadrimesters of the year.
