Flash Estimate – In July 2023, the tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded, for the second consecutive year in this month, more than 1 million overnight stays
According to the initial data for the tourist accommodation sector in the region, referring to the month of July 2023, it is estimated that there were 199.8 thousand guests who generated 1 083.4 thousand overnight stays, resulting in year-on-year changes of +6.7% and +2.8%, respectively. When compared to July 2019, there were increases of 48.2% and 30.7% in the same order.
In the first seven months of the year, overnight stays reached approximately 6.2 million, which is an increase of 18.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.
For the purpose of comparability with the data published by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodations with fewer than 10 beds. According to this method of results assessment, tourist accommodation overnight stays in July 2023 showed a slight year-on-year decrease of 1.3%, in contrast with the national trend (+1.3%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal experienced a decline of 9.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, totalling 193.9 thousand (17.9% of the total), while overnight stays by residents from abroad increased by 6.0%, totalling 889.5 thousand. It is worth noting that compared to July 2019, the change in overnight stays by residents of Portugal was +63.8%, while for residents from abroad, it was +25.1%. In July 2023, there were 46.2 thousand guests with residence in the country and 153.7 thousand with residence abroad.
In the country as a whole, in July 2023, the domestic market contributed with 2.8 million overnight stays, experiencing a 2.9% year-on-year decrease. The international markets predominated (accounting for 68.1% of the total) and totalled 6.0 million overnight stays, representing a 3.4% increase.

The first estimated data for the reference month in the region show that the main markets of residents from abroad accounted for 82.1% of the total overnight stays. Among them, the UK market recorded the highest number of overnight stays in July 2023, with approximately 192.4 thousand (-4.5% compared to the same month last year), followed by Germany, with 182.0 thousand (+3.1%), and France, with 79.8 thousand (+4.4%).
In July 2023, 7.8% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not register guest activity.
