DREM releases the final results of the Tourism Statistics for the year 2024 and updates the respective Time Series (1976-2024)
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, the final results of the Tourism Statistics for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), for the year 2024 on its official statistics website.
This publication includes an analysis of the main results, from which the following key points may be drawn, summarising the evolution of the sector during the reference year:
Accommodation establishments (total) - In 2024, the number of overnight stays increased by 7.2% in 2024 and surpassed 12 million
In 2024, the number of overnight stays in the overall tourist accommodation (hotel establishments, rural and housing tourism, local accommodation, time-sharing, holiday camps and campsites) exceeded 12.0 million, reflecting a growth of 7.2% compared to 2023 (+41.5% compared to 2019). Residents in Portugal contributed with 1.7 million overnight stays, showing a decrease of 2.1% compared to 2023, while non-resident foreigners originated 10.3 million overnight stays, corresponding to an increase of 9.0%.
Tourism accommodation establishments - 2024 records all-time highs: over 2.2 million guest arrivals and 11.8 million overnight stays
In 2024, there were 2.2 million guests in tourist accommodation, representing growths of 6.7% and 61.4% compared to 2023 and 2019, respectively.
The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation in 2024 – which includes hotel establishments, rural tourism and local accommodation - stood at 11.8 million, corresponding to an increase of 7.4% compared to 2023 (+44.8% compared to 2019).
Residents in Portugal contributed with 1.7 million overnight stays, a decrease of 2.2% compared to 2023 but a significant increase of 63.8% compared to 2019. The national market was the third most important, after the British and German markets, representing 14.2% of the total.
Overnight stays from non-resident foreigners originated around 10.1 million overnight stays (85.8% of the total), corresponding to a 9.2% increase in this variable compared to the previous year. The main markets were Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic and the United States, which accounted for 75.2% of overnight stays from non-resident foreigners (75.4% in 2023).
The annual net bed-occupancy rate (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) stood at 66.8%, growing by 1.4 pp from 2023 and 8.8 pp from 2019.
The average length of stay was 4.71 nights, slightly above the previous year's figure (4.67 nights).
In 2024, total revenue from tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) amounted to 761.1 million euros, while revenue from accommodation was approximately 540.7 million euros, reflecting increases of 16.0% and 16.9%, respectively, compared to 2023. When compared to 2019, the increases were 86.8% and 102.2%, respectively.
Revenue per available room (RevPAR) in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) reached 83.53 euros in 2024, a rise of 13.9% over 2023 and 88.6% compared to 2019. The average daily rate (ADR) per occupied room reached 109.28 euros, +13.1% year-on-year (+58.8% compared to 2019).
Hotel establishments - Overnight stays grew by 2.1% in 2024, with the segment’s share approaching 70%
In 2024, hotels recorded 1.5 million guest arrivals, resulting in 8.3 million overnight stays, representing annual growth rates of 1.0% and 2.1%, respectively (+34.7% and +22.8% compared to 2019).
This segment accounted for 70.3% of total overnight stays in collective tourist accommodation in the ARM, the lowest share ever recorded.
Total revenue from hotels stood at 687.3 million euros, while revenue from accommodation approached 480.0 million euros, corresponding to increases of 14.9% and 15.7% compared to 2023 (+80.8% and +95.0% over 2019, respectively).
Overnight stays by non-residents reached nearly 7.1 million (85.3% of hotel overnight stays), marking a 3.7% increase over the previous year. The main source markets were the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Spain, which together accounted for 74.5% of non-resident hotel overnight stays.
National tourists generated over 1.2 million overnight stays (-6.2% compared to 2023), representing 14.7% of total hotel overnight stays. The Portuguese market ranked third in this segment, after the British and German markets.
The net bed occupancy rate reached approximately 70.0%, +2.0 pp compared to 2023, and +8.1 pp compared to 2019.
The average hotel stay length increased by 1.1%, from 4.75 nights in 2023 to 4.80 nights in 2024.
The 2024 annual average RevPAR stood at 89.46 euros (+14.5% compared to 2023 and +87.1% compared to 2019), and ADR was 112.64 euros (+13.3% year-on-year and +60.2% compared to 2019).
Rural tourism - Overnight stays increased by 8.6%, representing 2.4% of tourism accommodation in 2024
In 2024, the average number of establishments in operation within rural tourism stood at 69, with available bed capacity totalling 1 329 beds (+74 compared to 2023 and +144 compared to 2019). The number of staff employed was approximately 355.
A total of 73.8 thousand guest arrivals and 277.1 thousand overnight stays were recorded in 2024, the latter representing 2.4% of total collective tourist accommodation overnight stays and reflecting an increase of 8.6% over 2023 (+75.2% compared to 2019).
Local accommodation - Overnight stays rose by 23.8% in 2024, with the segment's share exceeding 27%
In this segment, 653.1 thousand guest arrivals were recorded (+22.7% compared to 2023), generating around 3.2 million overnight stays (+23.8%), which represented 27.3% of total collective tourist accommodation overnight stays. Compared to 2019, the increases in guest arrivals and overnight stays in local accommodation were 187.3% and 162.3%, respectively.
Time-sharing - Overnight stays amounted to 571.2 thousand (+0.6% compared to 2023)
This segment recorded 55.8 thousand guest arrivals (+4.7% compared to 2023; +11.7% compared to 2019). Overnight stays amounted to 571.2 thousand, up 0.6% year-on-year (-8.6% compared to 2019).
Of the total guest arrivals and overnight stays recorded in 2024, approximately 69.3% and 66.8%, respectively, were already included in the hotel statistics, as all time-sharing establishments classified under “right-to-use” ownership model are part of the Survey on Guest Stays in Hotels and Other Accommodation (IPHH). The total number of time-sharing establishments is determined separately through a specific survey conducted by DREM – the on Time-sharing Guest Stays. In 2024, this segment recorded 17.1 thousand guest arrivals and 189.7 thousand overnight stays, with an average stay of 8.36 days.
Other types of collective tourist accommodation - Overnight stays in holiday camps and hostels (+5.4%) and in camping parks (+34.8%) increased between 2023 and 2024
In 2024, 11.6 thousand guest arrivals were recorded in holiday camps and youth hostels, with a total of 38.1 thousand overnight stays, reflecting a 5.4% increase compared to 2023 (+60.5% compared to 2019). The domestic market was responsible for 77.1% of these overnight stays, marking a 9.3% increase compared to 2023.
The three camping parks in the ARM received 6 391 campers, resulting in a total of 15 479 overnight stays, representing year-on-year increases of 31.3% and 34.8%, respectively. The international market accounted for 77.5% of guest arrivals and 76.3% of total overnight stays.
Golf - Number of rounds played on the Region’s golf courses increased by 5.2% in 2024
According to the Golf Course Survey, 78 983 rounds were played on the three golf courses of the ARM in 2024, corresponding to a 5.2% increase compared to 2023 (+20.8% compared to 2019). This activity generated approximately 4.0 million euros in revenue, representing a 5.6% rise compared to 2023 (+54.8% compared to 2019).
Movement of passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports - Transit passengers increased by 16.4% in 2024
According to data provided by the Ports Administration of the ARM, 316 cruise ships docked in the Region in 2024, 37 more than in 2023 (+18 compared to 2019). A total of 716.8 thousand transit passengers were recorded, representing a 16.4% increase compared to 2023 (+21.7% compared to 2019). Notably, 92.5% of this passenger traffic occurred during the first and third four-month periods of the year.
