Overnight stays in the Region's tourist accommodation grew 2.2% year-on-year

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded, in July 2026, the arrival of 247.4 thousand guests, who generated 1 342.6 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year changes of +0.4% and +2.2%, respectively. The hotel segment accounted for 64.2% of overnight stays (862.2 thousand) of the total overnight stays, decreasing 0.7% year-on-year. In turn, the number of overnight stays in local accommodation (33.8% of the total) rose 8.9%, while rural tourism (2.0% of the total) fell 6.4%, year-on-year.

For comparability with the data released by INE, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds; on this basis, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded a year-on-year change of -0.9%, a change in the opposite direction to that observed nationally (+2.1%).

In July, the largest increases in overnight stays were recorded in Alentejo (+7.7%) and Norte (+6.3%). Conversely, the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira showed the largest decreases (-1.2% and -0.9%, respectively). Algarve (30.8% of the total), Grande Lisboa (20.2%) and Norte (17.4%) together accounted for 68.4% of total overnight stays.

In the first seven months of 2026, guests arriving at the Region's total tourist accommodation amounted to 1 486.1 thousand, representing a growth of 5.8% compared with the same period of the previous year. Overnight stays also increased by 2.2% compared with the same period of 2025, standing at 7.5 million.

The net bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in the Region, in the month under review, was 70.5%, down 4.9 percentage points (pp) compared with the same month of the previous year (75.4%). In turn, the room occupancy rate stood at 81.9% (85.4% in July 2025).

In July 2026, the average length of stay across all tourist accommodation stood at 4.89 nights, above the 4.81 nights recorded in July 2025. Local accommodation showed the highest average length of stay (4.95 nights), followed by the hotel sector (4.91 nights). Rural tourism recorded the lowest average length of stay, at 3.73 nights.

It should be noted that the 10 main source markets accounted for 81.5% of total overnight stays recorded in July 2026. In this month, Portugal remained the leading source market, accounting for 19.1% of total overnight stays (+8.2% compared with the same period of the previous year). This lead had already been observed in the previous month and during the summer of 2025 (June, July and August). It was followed by Germany (15.2%; +3.1%) and the United Kingdom (13.9%; -5.9%). France ranked fourth, with a share of 9.0% (+0.8%), followed by Poland (6.2%; -6.7%) and the Netherlands (5.7%; +11.5%).

In July 2026, total revenue and revenue from accommodation recorded year-on-year growth of 5.8% and 4.5%, respectively, standing, in the same order, at 101.8 million euros and 74.0 million euros. Across the country as a whole, in the same month, both total revenue and revenue from accommodation recorded year-on-year growth of 4.9%.

On a cumulative basis, in the Region, total revenue and revenue from accommodation recorded year-on-year changes of +7.8% and +7.2%, respectively, totalling 534.6 million euros and 382.9 million euros, in the same order, for the period from January to July 2026.

In July 2026, revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at around 127.05 euros across tourist accommodation as a whole (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds), up 1.7% compared with the same month of the previous year. In turn, the average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation rose from 146.28 euros in July 2025 to 155.14 euros in July 2026 (+6.1% year-on-year change).

From January to July 2026, across tourist accommodation as a whole (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds), RevPAR stood at 98.18 euros, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.1%. In the hotel sector, RevPAR was 106.17 euros, corresponding to a year-on-year growth of 5.0%. As for ADR, the values were higher, standing at 131.32 euros (+8.9%) and 137.21 euros in the hotel sector (+10.2%).
