In September 2015
Hotel industry kept up a steady pace of growth, although below the national average
Initial estimates for September 2015 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+3.1%), total revenue (+6.7%) and lodging revenue (+11.2%).
At the country level, the rates of change stood at +6.2% in nights spent, +14.7% in total revenue and +16.9% in revenue from accommodation.
The number of overnight stays in Madeira in the month of reference was close to 651,000. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation stood at 32.0 and 20.4 million euros, respectively.
Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that for the reference month the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were -7.8% and +4.6%, respectively.
In the first nine months of 2015, the overnight stays increased by 4.9% when compared to the same period of 2014, while the growth in total revenue (+8.1%) and lodging revenue (+10.6%) was more pronounced.
The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 75.2%, up by 3.4 percentage points from September 2014 and the highest between the Portuguese NUTS2 regions.
The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +12.5%, increasing to € 48.55.
Concerning overnight stays, revenue and RevPAR this was the best September in the history of the regional tourism industry.
More rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses
The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first nine months of 2015 stood at 33,858 (+1.5% compared to the corresponding period of 2014). 60.2% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and UK. 36.4% of the total rounds were sold by tour operators, 34.4% by the golf courses themselves and the remaining 29.2% by hotel establishments and similar.
Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports increased
According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 351,270 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in the January to September 2015 period, up by 30.7% year-on-year.
