DREM releases the 3rd Edition of the Barometer of the Outermost Regions
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the 3rd edition of the Barometer of the Outermost Regions.
As is well known, the European Union (EU) includes nine regions that benefit from the status of Outermost Regions (ORs), as defined by Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU.
The " Barometer of the OR " compiles a unique repository of information, consisting of a set of indicators that characterize the ORs, based on data from various official statistics producers.
The release is structured into sixteen chapters: territory, population, education, health, labour market, income, economic accounts, prices, agriculture, transport, tourism, science and technology, information society, crime, regional competitiveness, and social progress.
The main conclusions for each thematic area are as follows:
Territory - Madeira has about one-third the area of the Azores and one-tenth that of the Canary Islands.
Population - Proportion of young and elderly population in Madeira stands below the EU average.
Education - Madeira has the lowest early school leaving rate among the ORs.
Health - Madeira stands out positively in the infant mortality rate.
Labor Market - Madeira and the Azores are the only ORs with unemployment rates below double digits.
Income - Portuguese ORs show the best results in poverty indicators.
Economic Accounts - GDP grew more in real terms in Madeira and the Canary Islands.
Prices - Price growth in the Macaronesia ORs was higher than in the countries to which they belong.
Agriculture - Madeira has a low ratio of utilised agricultural area to total surface area.
Transport - Madeira and the Canary Islands have the highest growth in air passenger transport.
Tourism - Canary Islands have almost six times more overnight stays than the other ORs combined.
Science and Technology - Share of R&D in GDP in the Macaronesia ORs is meagre.
Information Society - Canary Islands stand out in internet indicators.
Crime - Relative position of the Macaronesia ORs varies depending on the type of crime.
EU Regional Competitiveness Index - Madeira ranked 2nd among the ORs.
EU Social Progress Index - Madeira and the Azores climbed in the ranking.
