DREM releases the 2nd edition of the Outermost Regions Barometer
Continuing the initiative of the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) to provide an Outermost Regions Barometer, the second edition of this product is launched today.
The European Union (EU) comprises 9 regions that benefit from the status of Outermost Regions (ORs), as defined by Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU.
The "OR Barometer" brings together a comprehensive set of indicators that characterize the ORs, utilising data from various statistical organisations that produce official information.
The dissemination is structured into fifteen chapters: territory, population, education, health, labor market, income, economic accounts, prices, agriculture, transportation, tourism, science and technology, information society, regional competitiveness, and social progress.
The main conclusions for each thematic area can be summarised as follows:
Territory - Madeira is the OR that is geographically closest to its respective country's capital.
Population - Median age in the ORs of Macaronesia is lower than that of their respective countries.
Education - ORs generally exhibit lower performance compared to the countries they are integrated into.
Health - Madeira stands out in terms of the number of hospital beds and the number of doctors per 100,000 inhabitants.
Labor Market - Unemployment rates in Portuguese ORs are significantly lower than in other regions.
Income - Macaronesia ORs have a higher at-risk poverty rate compared to their respective Member States.
Economic Accounts - Canary Islands and Madeira experienced stronger GDP growth.
Prices - ORs had lower price growth compared to their respective countries.
Agriculture - Madeira has a lower ratio of agricultural area to total surface area.
Transportation - Indicators highlight the significance of the Canary Islands in this field.
Tourism - Macaronesia ORs have a higher dependence on tourism.
Science and Technology - Contribution of R&D to the GDP of Macaronesia ORs is very low.
Information Society - Macaronesia ORs have the best performance.
EU Regional Competitiveness Index - Madeira ranked 2nd among the ORs.
EU Social Progress Index - Canary Islands exhibit the highest level of performance among the ORs.
