DREM releases a new edition of the Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira

For the year 2022, DREM releases the Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2022, a compendium of statistical information at the regional and municipal levels, serving as a crucial tool to support regional development policies and the study of territorial dynamics.

This publication is organized into four major chapters: The Territory, The Persons, The Economic Activity, and the State, which are further analysed in 27 sections.

At the beginning of each section, a set of key indicators is presented to facilitate a more immediate assessment of the positioning of different territorial units in the context of the phenomena portrayed. The information tables are presented in bilingual format (Portuguese and English).

Accompanying this publication is an analysis of results ("Em Foco"), covering 24 of the chapters in the Yearbook, from which the following highlights are extracted:

I – Territory – "In 2022, in most of the ARM stations, September was the warmest month, and March was the coldest."

II – Environment – "The water distributed in the Region in 2021 was 76.4 m3 per inhabitant, above the national value (63.9 m3 per inhabitant)."

III – Population – "In 2022, the Region recorded a population growth of 566 persons, a result of a negative natural balance of 1,345 persons and a positive migratory balance of 1,911 persons."

IV – Education – "In the 2021/2022 school year, the gross transition/completion rate for secondary education slightly decreased to 88.7%."

V – Culture and Sports – "In 2022, the expenses of the Municipalities of the ARM on cultural and creative activities increased by 38.0%, but their share in the total expenses of Municipalities remained below the national average."

VI – Health – "In the ARM, in 2022, the number of doctors and nurses per thousand inhabitants increased."

VII – Labour Market – "The unemployment rate in the ARM in 2022 was 7.0%, decreasing by 1.0 pp compared to 2021 but remaining above the national average."

VIII – Social Protection – "In December 2022, there were 66.5 thousand Social Security pensioners in the ARM, representing 26.3% of the resident population."

IX – Income and Living Conditions – "In 2022, for the second consecutive year, the severe material and social deprivation rate decreased compared to the previous year, although it remained above the national average."

X – Regional Accounts – "The regional Gross Domestic Product exceeded 6 billion euros in 2022, growing by 14.2% in real terms."

XI – Prices – "In 2022, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the ARM registered an average annual change rate of 7.0%, lower than the national value, which was 7.8%."

XII – Enterprises and Establishments – "In 2021, there were 29,986 enterprises headquartered in the ARM, 272 of which were financial and 29,714 were non-financial."

XIII – International Trade – "In 2022, the ARM recorded an imports-to-exports coverage rate of 104.4%."

XIV – Agriculture and Forestry – "In 2022, grape production expressed in must reach 33.3 thousand hectolitres, an increase of 0.8% compared to 2021."

XV – Fishery – "In 2022, the value of the first sale of fish increased by 10.5% compared to 2021."

XVI – Energy – "In the ARM, in 2021, domestic electricity consumption and automobile fuel consumption per inhabitant were below the national average."

XVII – Construction and Housing – "In the ARM, in 2022, the number of licensed and completed buildings increased by 5.9% and 4.7%, respectively."

XVIII – Transport – "In 2022, passenger traffic at the ARM airports grew by 102.1% compared to 2021."

XIX – Communications – "In 2022, the number of broadband internet accesses per 100 inhabitants was slightly lower in the ARM compared to the country."

XX – Tourism – "In 2022, the number of overnight stays per 100 inhabitants in the Region was about 5 times higher than the national average."

XXI – Credit Institutions and Financial Enterprises – "In 2021, unlike the country, most of the credit granted in the ARM was for housing."

XXII – Science and Technology – "In 2021, research and development expenses as a percentage of GDP in the ARM stood at 0.46%, substantially below the 1.68% in the country."

XXIII – Local Administration – "In 2021, in the municipalities of the ARM, the percentage of taxes in the total revenue from non-financial operations was 28.1%."

XXIV – Justice – "Crimes related to driving under the influence of alcohol increased in the ARM in 2022."
