DREM releases the Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases the Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2024, a compendium of statistical information at regional and municipal levels, which constitutes an important instrument to support the definition of regional development policies and the study of territorial dynamics.

In the edition referring to 2024, the publication in PDF format will be made available in the first quarter of 2026, in a bilingual format (Portuguese and English), including texts and infographics (one page of each per chapter), while the Excel version of the publication, consisting of a compilation of tables, is already available.

It should be noted that the publication is organised into four major chapters: Territory, People, Economic Activity and State, which are in turn analysed across 28 sub-chapters of information.

Accompanying this publication is a results analysis (“Em Foco”), covering the aforementioned 28 chapters of the Yearbook, from which the following highlights are drawn:

I – Territory “In 2024, at the Funchal/Observatory station, the recorded annual average temperature was 21.5 °C, one of the highest values observed at this station since records began.”

II – Environment – “Water distributed in the Region in 2024 amounted to 88.9 m³ per inhabitant, slightly below the value recorded in 2023 (89.1 m³ per inhabitant).”

III – Population – “In 2024, the Region recorded a population increase of 2,818 persons, resulting from a positive net migration of 3,599 persons and a negative natural balance of 781 persons.”

IV - Education – “In the 2023/2024 school year, the number of pupils enrolled in the 1st cycle of basic education increased by 2.9%.”

V - Culture and Sports – “In 2024, expenditure by the ARM municipalities on sporting activities and facilities increased by 13.5%.”

VI - Health – "In 2024, the number of doctors and nurses per thousand increased in the Region."

VII - Labour Market – “The unemployment rate in the ARM in 2024 stood at 5.6%, decreasing by 0.4 percentage points compared with 2023.”

VIII - Social Protection – “In 2024, the annual average amount of pensions processed was 6 793 euros, representing an increase of 11.7% compared with the previous year.”

IX - Income and Living Conditions – "In the ARM, in 2024, the at-risk-of-poverty rate declined for the third consecutive year, standing at 16.6%."

X - Regional Accounts – "The region’s GDP approached 7.5 billion euros in 2024, growing by 1.5% in real terms.”

XI - Prices – "The Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded an average annual rate of change of 3.3%, higher than the national figure of 2.4%.”

XII - Enterprises and Establishments – "In 2024, the number of enterprises, turnover, and personnel employed in non-financial enterprises in the ARM grew above the national average."

XIII - International Trade – "Imports grew in 2024, in contrast to exports, although the Region maintained a positive balance in the trade balance of goods with foreign countries."

XIV - Agriculture and Forestry – "In 2024, potato production grew 4.3% compared to 2023, while banana production fell 3.0%.”

XV - Fisheries – "In 2024, the first-sale value of fish unloaded decreased by 8.2% compared to 2023."

XVI - Energy – "Total electricity consumption in the Region grew by 1.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year."

XVII - Construction and Housing – "In 2024, the number of licensed buildings increased by 6.8%, while completed buildings decreased by 16.1%."

XVIII - Transport – "Passenger movement at ARM airports grew by 4.6% in 2024 compared to 2023."

XIX - Communications – "In 2024, the number of fixed broadband internet accesses per 100 inhabitants in the Region was slightly lower than the national figure."

XX - Tourism – "In 2024, the number of overnight stays per 100 inhabitants in the Region was approximately five times higher than the national average."

XXI - Credit Institutions and Financial Enterprises – "In 2024, housing loans constituted the majority of loans in the Region, unlike the national trend."

XXII - Business Services – "In 2024, the turnover of business service activities grew by 1.4% compared to the previous year."

XXIII - Science and Technology – "R&D expenditure as a percentage of GDP stood at 0.48% in 2023, significantly below the national average of 1.68%."

XXIV - Information Society – "In 2025, 67.1% of persons aged between 16 and 74 interacted with public bodies via the Internet."

XXV - Internal Trade – "In 2024, trade enterprises headquartered in the ARM generated a turnover of 3.7 billion euros and employed 14 782 persons."

XXVI - Regional and Local Administration – "In 2024, the Regional Public Administration maintained a positive balance in the accounts of the Regional Public Administrations of Madeira, while the revenue-to-expenditure ratio of municipalities deteriorated in 2023”.

XXVII - Justice – "In 2024, the crime rate in the Region was 26.5‰, 1.6 per mille points lower than in 2023."

XXVIII - Political Participation – "In 2025, the elections for the Legislative Assembly of Madeira stood out for the lowest abstention rate recorded in the last 10 years."
