Local administration expenditure on culture and sports increased
In 2015, 16 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira met the eligibility criteria of the Museums Survey (19 in the previous year). These 16 museums registered almost 220 thousand visitors, down by 14.8% from 2014.
In the 3 botanic gardens and aquariums (the same as the previous year) 642.5 thousand visits were counted in 2015, up by 5.1% from 2014.
Data collected from the art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces survey show that 260 exhibitions with 7,779 pieces (7,509 in 2013) took place in the 33 spaces in activity in Madeira.
In the reference year, 29 periodic publications were counted in Madeira having been released a total of 9.1 million copies (down by 13.1% from 2014).
In 2015, there were 16,652 sessions of cinema in Madeira, a 3.4% increase over the previous year. The number of spectators in 2015 went up by 21.8% and stood at approximately 264 thousand, with ticket revenues approaching 1.3 million euros, a 17.7% increase over the year 2014.
According to the 2015 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration” the percentage of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities stood at 4.7%, up by 1 percentage point from the previous year. Of the 7.4 million spent in cultural and sports activities, 76.1% was destined for culture and 23.9% for sport.
