DREM releases Culture indicators

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released cultural indicators for the year 2022. The Time Series on Culture, Sports, and Recreation is now available on its website, updated with final data for all indicators for the year.

In 2022, a disruption in the data series of the Periodical Publications Survey was observed, resulting from methodological changes, specifically alterations to the survey scope. Apart from periodic publications in diffusion mediums such as "paper" and "paper and electronic simultaneously," the medium "solely electronic" is now also considered. The survey now exclusively includes newspapers and magazines as types of periodic publications.

Museums experienced increased attendance, and art galleries showcased more exhibitions and works compared to 2019

In 2022, the 18 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira met the eligibility criteria for the Museum Survey, one more than in 2021, housing approximately 113.2 thousand items in their collections. Approximately 338.3 thousand visitors were recorded, reflecting an 80.9% increase from 2021 (+ 151.3 thousand persons), with 58.5% being foreigners (197.9 thousand) and 8.0% school group visitors (27.1 thousand). Compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019, there was a 58.7% increase in the number of visitors, making the total number of visitors in 2022 the highest in the series that began in 2012.

The 36 art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces in operation in the region (two more than in 2021) organised 274 exhibitions (a 77.9% increase from the previous year). These exhibitions featured the works of 3,562 artists, displaying 7,035 artworks (3,753 in 2021), resulting in an 87.5% increase in the number of exhibited works. Compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic, there was an increase in the number of galleries and exhibition spaces (+5.9%), exhibitions (+5.0%), and exhibited works (+4.2%).

Periodical publications with a total circulation of around 6 million copies were recorded in 2022

Out of the 13 publications in Madeira, 7 were magazines, and 6 were newspapers. In terms of diffusion medium, 9 publications were distributed in "paper and electronic" format, 2 in "solely paper" format, and 2 in "solely electronic" format. In the analysed year, 795 editions of newspapers and 28 editions of magazines were printed, totalling 823 printed editions. The total print run was approximately 4.6 million copies (4.5 million newspapers and 61.4 thousand magazines). The total circulation reached around 6 million, with newspapers accounting for 99.3% of the overall circulation.
