Number of sessions, spectators, and revenue at the cinemas of the Region increased compared to the previous year but remained below the values of 2019
According to provisional data provided by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), in the 4th quarter of 2023, there were 3,299 cinema sessions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing an increase of 8.4% compared to the same period in 2022.
The number of spectators amounted to 38,701, decreasing by 6.7% year-on-year. Ticket revenue reached 216.1 thousand euros, declining by 8.0% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Regarding the year 2023, 14,100 cinema sessions were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, reflecting an increase of 8.8% compared to 2022. August recorded the highest number of sessions (1,374).
The number of spectators also increased in 2023, reaching 215,282, which corresponds to an increase of 37.1% compared to 2022. July stood out as the month with the highest number of spectators in the Region's cinema sessions (33,962).
Ticket revenue in 2023 amounted to 1,206.6 thousand euros, translating into an increase of 358.8 thousand euros (+42.3%) compared to the previous year.
Despite the increases compared to 2022, the sessions, spectators, and revenues were 18.7%, 22.9%, and 15.8% lower, respectively, than in 2019, the year before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
