In the first quarter of 2025

Number of bankruptcy, insolvency, and enterprise recovery incoming cases registered in the first-instance courts of the Madeira District had a quarterly decrease and a year-on-year increase

According to information provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ), the number of incoming cases filed in the Madeira District related to bankruptcy, insolvency, and recovery of enterprises fell from 54 in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 42 cases in the first quarter of 2024 (-22.2%). Compared to the same quarter of the previous year (41 cases), an increase of 2.4% was observed.

In the first quarter of 2025, a total of 41 cases were closed (-2.4% compared to the first quarter of 2024), 37 (90.2%) of which ended in bankruptcy or insolvency. The number of bankruptcies/insolvencies was lower than in the previous quarter (54) and the same quarter last year (39), representing changes of -31.5% and -5.1%, respectively.

Regarding the type of persons involved in the declared bankruptcies/insolvencies, the proportion of natural persons in the total number of cases exceeded that of legal persons, representing 86.5% of the total. In fact, out of the 37 bankruptcies/insolvencies declared in this quarter, 32 were of natural persons and 5 were of legal persons.
