In the 2nd quarter of 2025
Number of bankruptcy, insolvency and enterprise recovery incoming cases registered in the first-instance courts of the Madeira District increased both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year
According to information provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ), the number of incoming cases filed in the Madeira District related to bankruptcy, insolvency and enterprise recovery increased from 42 in the 1st quarter of 2025 to 58 in the 2nd quarter of 2025 (+38.1%). When compared with the same quarter of the previous year (43 cases), a year-on-year increase of 34.9% was observed.
In the 2nd quarter of 2025, a total of 48 cases were concluded (+20.0% compared with the 2nd quarter of 2024), 45 of which (93.8%) ended with a declared bankruptcy or insolvency. The number of declared bankruptcies/insolvencies was higher than that recorded in both the previous quarter (37) and the same quarter of the previous year (36), corresponding to increases of 21.6% and 25.0%, respectively.
With regard to the type of persons involved in the declared bankruptcies/insolvencies, natural persons accounted for a higher proportion than legal persons, representing 80.0% of the total. Of the 45 declared bankruptcies/insolvencies in this quarter, 36 concerned natural persons and 9 involved legal persons.
