DREM includes a new thematic area – Justice – on its website
From now onwards a new thematic area concerning Justice will be available on the website of the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira. Five indicators for the Autonomous Region of Madeira with information for the period 1998-2015 will be released, namely “offences recorded by the police forces”, “crime rate” and “public deeds”, all of them broken down by municipality.
In the years between 1998 and 2015, the number of offences recorded by the police forces dropped by 1.0% per year on average. In 2015, the number of offences stood at 6.5 thousand, down by 1.5 thousand from 1998 (7.9 thousand), representing a 18.8% decrease. Compared to 2014 (6.3 thousand), there was an increase of 2.4%.
The most common offences were “against persons” and “against patrimony” (in aggregate stood for 72.5% of total offences), which dropped by 17.3% and 39.4%, respectively, compared to 1998. Between 2014 and 2015, the “offences against persons” rose by 1.6% while the “offences against patrimony” declined by 7.9%.The other types of offences increased, namely the “offences against the state” (+22.8%).
The violation of the law that penalises the mistreatment of animals led to the recording of 69 offences in 2015.
In 2015, the crime rate – the ratio of the number of offences by the resident population (in thousands) – stood at 25.2‰, lower than in 1998 (32.7‰), but higher than in 2014 (24.4‰). The highest rates were registered in “crimes against the patrimony” (8.1‰) and in “crimes of assault” (7.2‰).

The number of public deeds dropped successively between 2006 and 2014. After reaching the lowest value in that period (3.8 thousand deeds in 2014), this indicator increased again in 2015 (+12.2% compared to 2014) and stood at 4.2 thousand. However it is a low figure when compared to maximum of the 2006-2015 period (18.6 thousand deeds in 2006).
Regarding the main notarial acts concluded by public deed between 2006 and 2015, the data show that there was a clear predominance of “buying and selling real estate”, which nevertheless dropped 13.4% per year on average.
