Average gross monthly earnings per worker increased by 5.9% year-on-year, reaching 1,439 euros
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the provisional figures for the third quarter of 2024 concerning the average gross monthly earnings per worker, referring to entities with fiscal headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). It should be noted that these statistics are provided to DREM by Statistics Portugal (INE) and are compiled based on information from the Monthly Earnings Declaration submitted by enterprises to Social Security (DMR/SS), data obtained by the INE through a protocol with the Institute for Social Security Informatics, I.P., and the Contribution Relationship of subscribers of the Caixa Geral de Aposentações (RC/CGA).
In the third quarter of 2024, the average total gross monthly earnings per worker (per job position) increased by 5.9% compared to the same period in 2023, amounting to 1,439 euros. Both regular and base earnings registered increases of 5.7% and 5.9%, reaching values of 1,253 and 1,206 euros, respectively.
In real terms, that is, adjusted for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) change in the Region, the total average earnings per worker rose by 2.1%, regular earnings increased by 1.9%, and base earnings grew by 2.1%.
These results encompass 106.9 thousand job positions (+3.4% compared to the third quarter of 2023), corresponding to Social Security beneficiaries and subscribers of the Caixa Geral de Aposentações of entities headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Year-on-year, significant increases in total earnings were observed in the activities of “Education” (Section P; +14.0%), “Administrative and support service activities” (Section N; +10.8%), in the public sector (+8.5%), in enterprises with 100 to 249 workers (+10.5%), in enterprises providing "Sector of mainly non-tradable non-market goods and services " (+8.1%), and in manufacturing enterprises classified as “Low industrial technology” (+9.5%).
In September 2024, the average total gross monthly earnings per worker in the Region was 1,439 euros, 5.8% lower than the national average of 1,528 euros.
Year-on-year, regarding gross total earnings, the national figure recorded an increase of 6.1%, a slightly higher change than that observed in the ARM (5.9%). As for regular gross earnings, the national average was 1,294 euros, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 6.4%, higher than the figures recorded in the Region (1,253 euros; 5.7%). In terms of average gross base earnings, the value for the ARM (1,206 euros) was slightly lower than the national average of 1,216 euros, with year-on-year changes of 5.9% for the Region and 6.3% for Portugal.
Similar to the Region, at the national level, the activity of “Electricity, gas, steam, hot and cold water, and air conditioning” (Section D) recorded the highest total gross earnings in September 2024 (3,503 euros in the ARM and 2,979 euros nationally). Both nationally and regionally, enterprises employing 250 to 499 workers reported the highest total gross earnings, with values of 1,782 euros and 1,783 euros, respectively.
In the ARM, the private sector’s average total gross monthly earnings per worker experienced a year-on-year increase lower than that of the public administration sector, with figures of 5.2% and 8.5%, respectively. The same trend was observed at the national level, with positive year-on-year changes of 6.0% in the private sector and 7.0% in the public sector.
