In the 2nd quarter of 2026
Average gross monthly earnings per worker increased 4.2% year-on-year, to 1 748 euros, but fell 0.3% in real terms

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases provisional figures for the 2nd quarter of 2026 regarding average monthly earnings per worker (per job position), for entities with tax domicile in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

In the 2nd quarter of 2026, average total gross monthly earnings per worker (per job position) increased 4.2% compared with the same period of 2025, standing at 1 748 euros. Regular earnings and base earnings rose 4.7% and 4.3%, reaching 1 377 and 1 320 euros, respectively.

In real terms, that is, taking as reference the change in the Region's Consumer Price Index (CPI), average total earnings per worker decreased 0.3%, regular earnings grew 0.2% and base earnings fell 0.1%, compared with the 2nd quarter of 2025.

These results cover 111.9 thousand jobs (+2.3% compared with the 2nd quarter of 2025), corresponding to Social Security beneficiaries and Caixa Geral de Aposentações contributors of entities with tax domicile in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Year-on-year, based on the Classification of Economic Activities (CAE-Rev.4), the largest increases in total earnings were seen in "Consultancy, scientific, technical and similar activities" (section N; +8.9%), "Other service activities" (section T; +7.3%), companies with 100 to 249 workers (+7.3%) and with 5 to 9 workers (+6.9%), the private sector (+4.9%), enterprises in "Less knowledge-intensive services" (+5.8%) and enterprises in "Low industrial technology" (+5.6%).

In the 2nd quarter of 2026, average total gross monthly earnings per worker in the Region was 1 748 euros, 4.7% below the national average, which stood at 1 835 euros. The year-on-year change at the national level was 5.1% in nominal terms (1 746 euros in June 2025) and 1.8% in real terms.

It should be recalled that data on average monthly earnings per worker are only available for the Country, ARM and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, with no breakdown available for the NUTS 2 regions of mainland Portugal. However, when analysing the differential between the Region and the Country, account should be taken of the weight that the Grande Lisboa region, which comprises a high number of workers, has in the national total. Although less comprehensive, the most recent information from the Quadros de Pessoal, which allows the average monthly earnings of employees to be determined, shows precisely that Grande Lisboa is the only region above the national average, and substantially so, with all other regions, including the ARM, positioned below that average.
