In the first quarter of 2026
Average gross monthly earnings per worker increased by 3.4% year-on-year, reaching 1 543 euros
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) publishes the provisional figures for the first quarter of 2026 on average monthly earnings per worker (per job position) of entities with fiscal headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). With the entry into force of Revision 4 of the Portuguese Classification of Economic Activities (CAE Rev. 4 - equivalent to NACE 2.1), the economic activity of enterprises submitting the Monthly Earning Declaration to Social Security and the Contribution Report of the General Pension Fund is now classified using this nomenclature, which is therefore used in the present analysis. However, data continue to be published according to CAE Rev. 3, which can be consulted in the statistical tables and in the time series.
In the first quarter of 2026, the average total gross monthly earnings per worker (per job position) increased by 3.4% compared with the same period of 2025, reaching 1 543 euros. Regular earnings and base earnings increased by 3.9% and 3.6%, reaching 1 360 euros and 1 305 euros, respectively.
In real terms, i.e. taking as reference the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the Region, average total earnings per worker increased by 0.6%, while regular earnings rose by 1.2% and base earnings by 0.8% compared with the first quarter of 2025.
These results cover 111.2 thousand job positions (+4.2% compared with the first quarter of 2025), corresponding to beneficiaries of Social Security and contributors to the General Pension Fund from entities with fiscal headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
In year-on-year terms, increases in total earnings were particularly notable in “Accommodation and food service activities” (Section I; +7.8%), “Other service activities” (Section T; +7.4%), enterprises with 50 to 99 employees (+8.0%) and 5 to 9 employees (+7.4%), the private sector (+4.0%), low-technology manufacturing enterprises (+7.7%) and medium-technology manufacturing enterprises (+6.2%). A decrease of 18.8% was also observed in “Publishing, broadcasting and production and distribution of content activities” (Section J), as well as a decline of 6.9% in “Agriculture, forestry and fishing” (Section A).
In the first quarter of 2026, the average total gross monthly earnings per worker in the Region stood at 1 543 euros, 4.2% below the national average, which was 1 611 euros. The year-on-year nominal change at the national level was 5.0% (1 534 euros in March 2025) and, in real terms, 2.7%.
