In the first quarter of 2024

Unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 6.1%

The results of the Labour Force Survey, for the first quarter of 2024, reveal an unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) estimated at 6.1%, a reduction of 0.1 percentage points (pp) compared to the previous quarter, and a decrease of 0.3 pp from the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

The estimated unemployed population quantified at 8,7 thousand persons, showed a 0.7% increase compared to the corresponding quarter last year and a 1.8% rise from the previous quarter.

The employed population reached approximately 134,1 thousand persons, setting a new historical high. This number represents a 5.9% year-on-year increase (7,5 thousand persons) and a 3.6% rise from the preceding quarter (4,7 thousand persons). Of the employed population, 4,2 thousand were underemployed in part-time, 5,8 thousand persons engaged in secondary employment, and 17,0 thousand worked from home (comprising 15.2% of employed women and 10.3% of employed men).

The activity rate for the working-age population (ages 16 to 89) in the first quarter of 2024 was estimated at 64.2%, a figure higher by 2.6 pp compared to the corresponding quarter last year and by 1.7 pp compared to the previous quarter. The activity rate for women stood at 60.2%, which was 8.5 pp lower than that for men (68.7%).

The estimated inactive population, totalling 114,1 thousand persons, decreased by 4.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and by 2.9% from the previous quarter.

In Portugal, the overall unemployment rate for the quarter under review was 6.8%, which is a 0.2 pp increase from the previous quarter and a 0.4 pp decrease from the corresponding quarter last year.

In the referred quarter, the regions with the highest unemployment rates were Peninsula de Setúbal (8.1%), Algarve (7.8%), and the ARA-Autonomous Region of the Azores (7.0%). In contrast, the regions with the lowest rates included the ARM (6.1%) and the regions of Alentejo (6.2%), Grande Lisboa (6.6%), and Centro (6.7%). The unemployment rate showed a quarterly increase across all regions except in Norte (-0.5 pp), Grande Lisboa (-0.1 pp), and the ARM (-0.1 pp).

On a year-on-year basis, the unemployment rate decreased in Peninsula de Setúbal region (-1.7 pp), Alentejo (-1.0 pp), Norte (-0.8 pp), Grande Lisboa (-0.7 pp), and the ARM (-0.3 pp). In contrast, Oeste and Vale do Tejo regions registered the highest increase (+1.4 pp), followed by Centro and the ARA, both witnessing an increase of 0.8 pp. Algarve recorded the smallest increase of 0.6 pp.
