Natural decrease was sharper than in the same period of the previous year

Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that, in the first half of 2022, the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a negative natural balance of -814 persons, resulting from a lower number of live births (825) than the number of deaths (1,639). In the same period of 2021, the natural balance had also been negative although less sharp (-605 persons, representing the difference between 817 live births and 1,422 deaths).

The number of live births, in the first six months of 2022 (825) increased by 1.0% compared to the same period of 2021, while the number of deaths recorded in the first half of 2022 (1,639) was 15.3% higher than in the same period of the previous year.

In the first half of 2022, 1 death under 1 year and 4 dead foetuses were registered.

In the period of reference, a total of 444 marriages took place, up by 166 (+59.7%) from the same period of 2021. The number of marriages celebrated in the first half of 2022 reached the highest value since the same period of 2009.
