In January 2025

Number of deaths increased compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births decreased

In January 2025, a total of 299 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a figure higher than that observed in January 2024 (56 more deaths; 23.0%).

The assessment of “excess mortality,” which compares the number of deaths recorded in the reference month (299 deaths) with the average for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 264 deaths), indicates an excess mortality rate of 13.3%. This reflects the fact that, during those years, the number of deaths was consistently lower than the value recorded in January 2025.

In January 2025, 1 stillbirth was recorded and there were no deaths under 1 year of age.

Also in January 2025, a total of 127 live births were registered, representing a 13.6% decrease compared to the same month in 2024 (20 fewer births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 172 persons in January 2025, a more significant decline than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance was -96.

In the first month of 2025, 64 marriages were celebrated, representing a 1.5% decline compared to January 2024 (one fewer marriage).
