Number of deaths increased by 28.1% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births fell by 6.2%
In May 2025, a total of 251 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a figure higher than that observed in May 2024 (55 more deaths; +28.1%). From January to May, a total of 1 284 deaths were registered, 195 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+17.9%).
The assessment of “excess mortality,” which compares the number of deaths recorded in the reference month (251 deaths) with the average for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 212 deaths), indicates an excess mortality rate of 18.7%. This reflects the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was always lower than the figure recorded in May 2025.
In May 2025, no deaths under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded.
Also in May 2025, a total of 137 live births were registered, corresponding to a decrease of 6.2% compared to the same month in 2024 (- 9 births). The total number of live births recorded in the first five months of 2025 stood at 671, which is 5.0% lower than that recorded in the same period of the previous year (-35 live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 114 persons in May 2025, a more pronounced decline than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance was -50. In the first five months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance stood at -613, showing a deterioration compared to that observed in the same period of 2024 (-383).
In the fifth month of 2025, 110 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 4.8% compared to the number of marriages celebrated in May 2024 (five more marriages). From January to May 2025, a total of 387 marriages were celebrated, 17 more than in the corresponding period of 2024 (+4.6%).
