Number of deaths increased by 11.6% compared to the previous year, while the number of live births decreased by 2.8%
In December 2025, 266 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that observed in December 2024 (35 more deaths; +15.2%). In 2025, a total of 2,872 deaths were registered, representing an increase of 298 deaths (+11.6%) compared with the previous year.
”The assessment of “excess mortality”, which compares the number of deaths in the reference month (266 deaths) with the average for the same month in the years 2016 to 2019 (238 deaths, on average), revealed an excess mortality rate of 11.6%, reflecting the fact that, throughout those years, the number of deaths was almost always lower than the figure recorded in December 2025.
In December 2025, no deaths of children under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded.
For the year as a whole, 3 deaths of children under 1 year of age were registered, 3 fewer than in 2024. Regarding stillbirths, 2 cases were recorded in 2025, 5 fewer than in the previous year.
In December 2025, 158 live births were recorded, corresponding to a decrease of 8.1% compared with the same month of 2024 (14 fewer births). The total number of live births recorded in 2025 (1 743) was 2.8% lower than that observed in 2024 (50 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 108 persons in December 2025, more unfavourable than that recorded in the same month of the previous year, when the value stood at -59. In 2025, the cumulative natural balance reached -1 129, representing a worsening compared with the figure observed in 2024 (-781).
In the last month of 2025, 105 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 10.5% compared with the number of marriages celebrated in December 2024 (10 more marriages). Throughout 2025, a total of 1 285 marriages were celebrated, up by 60 (+4.9%) from the previous year.
