Number of deaths decreased by 5.6% year-on-year, while the number of live births increased by 2.2% year-on-year
In May 2026, 238 deaths were registered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that recorded in May 2025 (14 fewer deaths; −5.6%). From January to May, 1 220 deaths were recorded, 65 fewer year-on-year (−5.1%).
The assessment of "excess mortality", which compares the deaths recorded in the reference month (238 deaths) with the average for the same month over the years 2016 to 2019 (212 deaths, on average), shows an excess mortality of 12.5%, reflecting the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was always lower than the figure recorded in May 2026.
In May 2026, 1 stillbirth was registered and no deaths of infants under 1 year of age were recorded.
Also in May 2026, 140 live births were recorded, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.2% (3 additional births). The total number of live births registered in the first five months of 2026 (729) was 8.3% higher year-on-year (56 additional live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 98 persons in May 2026, a less adverse year-on-year outcome, against −115 in May 2025. In the first five months of 2026, the cumulative natural balance stood at −491, representing a year-on-year improvement (−612).
In the fifth month of 2026, 107 marriages were celebrated, representing a year-on-year decrease of 5.3% (6 fewer marriages). From January to May, 373 marriages were celebrated, 17 fewer year-on-year (−4.4%).
