In March 2026, 244 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a lower number than observed in March 2025 (13 fewer deaths; -5.1%). From January to March, a total of 762 deaths were registered, 27 fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year (-3.4%).
The assessment of “excess mortality”, which compares the number of deaths recorded in the reference month (244) with the average number observed in the same month over the period 2016 to 2019 (251 deaths on average), shows that there was a mortality deficit of 2.7%, reflecting the fact that, in most of those years, the number of deaths exceeded the level recorded in March 2026.

Also in March 2026, 155 live births were registered, representing a 17.4% increase compared with March 2025 (23 more live births). The total number of live births registered in the first three months of 2026 (442) was 13.6% higher than in the same period of 2025 (53 more live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 89 persons in March 2026, less adverse than in the same month of the previous year, when the figure stood at -125. In the first three months of 2026, the cumulative natural balance amounted to ‑320, showing a decrease compared to the same period in 2025 (-400).
