DREM releases the main results of the Household Budget Survey 2015/2016

DREM releases today the main results of the Household Budget Survey 2015/2016 for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). The interviews of this statistical operation took place between March 2015 and March 2016. In the ARM 1,314 valid interviews were counted.

In 2015/2016 (i.e. the one year period counting from March 2015), the annual mean consumption expenditure of the Madeiran households stood at €18,204, down by 2.1% from the previous survey, held in 2010/2011. The expenditures with housing (including water, electricity, gas and other fuels), food and transports  represented in 2015/2016 61.6% of the households’ annual mean consumption expenditure. The concentration in these three classes had already been evidenced in the previous surveys, although the expenditure in housing grew from 32.1% in 2010/2011 to 34.0% in 2015/2016, while the expenditure on food and beverage dropped by 0.2 percentage points (p.p.) to 14.0%, and the expenditure on transports also decreased by 2.1 p.p. to 13.6%.

In 2014 (the year for which the households declared their income), the net annual mean income was €22,793 by household, declining by 2.9% from 2009. €17,441 (76.5%) corresponded to monetary income (76.5%) and €5,352 (23.5%) to non-monetary income.

In 2014, the at-risk-of-poverty rate stood at 21.6%, while the inequality measured by the Gini coefficient rose to 31.7%.

In 2015/2016, the great majority of the Madeiran households had access to a set of basic amenities. 99.8% had a stove, 99.3% a refrigerator and 95.6% a laundry machine. 88.1% of the households had a microwave oven and 72.7% a vacuum cleaner.
