Hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded an increase in the number of beds and in hospital staff
The average number of used hospital beds in the year in question (arithmetic mean of the quarters) was2,018 (962 in public hospitals and 1,056 in private hospitals), which represented an increase of 8.0% when compared to 2019 (1,868). The bed ratio per 1,000 inhabitants rose to 7.9 in 2020 (7.4 in 2019).
At the end of 2020, the hospital staff consisted of 512 doctors, 1,416 nurses, 268 technicians of diagnostics and therapeutics, and 1,441 auxiliary workers, totaling 4,707 health professionals. When compared to 2019, the hospital staff in 2019 rose by 4,7%, an increase that was shared by the following professional types: + 3.0% in the number of doctors, + 2.2% in nurses and +18,7% in auxiliary personnel. With regard to diagnostic and therapeutic technicians, there was one fewer technician (268 in 2020).
In 2020, there were 21.5 thousand hospitalisations (26.8 thousand in 2019), a 19.5% decrease over 2019. To that figure corresponded 555.7 thousand hospitalisation days.
In addition, 269.3 thousand outpatient appointments were performed, a decrease of 14.6%, when compared to 2019 (315.3 thousand appointments). Despite this reduction, the orthopedics and psychiatry specialties showed increases of +14.2% and +2.2%, respectively.
On average, about 38.3 surgeries (except minor surgeries) were performed per day in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2020, of which 27.0 were performed in public hospitals. The global average value represents a decrease of 2.0 surgeries/day compared to 2019 (40.3).
In the emergency services of the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 92.5 thousand attendances were carried out, which corresponds to a decrease of 26.1% compared to 2019 (125.2 thousand attendances). Approximately 87.8% of the attendances took place in public hospitals.
