Number of medical doctors, pharmacists, and nurses in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased
In 2023, there were 1,375 medical doctors registered in the Guild, an increase of 57 (+4.3%) compared to the previous year (1,318), with 58.0% (798) being women. Based on the declared place of residence, 70.4% (968) of the medical doctors resided in Funchal, 13.4% (184) in Santa Cruz, and 5.2% (71) in Câmara de Lobos.
Of the total number of medical doctors in 2023, 802 were specialists (58.3%) and 573 (41.7%) were not specialists. By age group, 27.9% were under 31 years old and 16.6% were over 65 years old.
According to the provisional post-census estimates of the Resident Population for 2023, based in the final results of the 2021 Census, there were, on average, 5.4 medical doctors per thousand inhabitants in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (compared to 5.2‰ in 2022). This indicator was higher in Funchal (9.0 medical doctors per thousand inhabitants) and lower in the municipality of Santana (1.2 medical doctors per thousand inhabitants).
The number of dentists registered in the professional order was 236, representing a decrease of 1.7% compared to 2022 (240). On average, there were 0.9 dentists per thousand inhabitants in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (the same as in 2022).
The number of nurses registered with their respective order increased by 3.8% in 2023 compared to 2022 (2,647 in 2023; 2,551 in 2022). On average, there were 10.3 nurses per thousand inhabitants in the Region, a ratio higher than in 2022 (10.0‰).
As for pharmacists, 274 were registered with the Order of Pharmacists, an increase of three compared to 2022. Among them, 187 were laboratory pharmacists, corresponding to a ratio of 1.1 pharmacists per thousand inhabitants (unchanged from 2022).
The data provided here are part of the publication "Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2023," the complete edition of which will be released in the first quarter of 2025.
