In 2024

Number of inoculations administered in the Region increased by 6.1%

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its website, data on the number of inoculations, by type of vaccine, administered in the Region in 2024. The data were provided by the Regional Directorate of Health (DRS).

The DRS has reclassified the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine, Immunoglobulins and specific biological sera, as well as Tuberculin Tests, outside the “Extra PRV” group (Regional Vaccination Plan), while keeping the remaining vaccines within this group. For comparative purposes, this new classification criterion was applied retrospectively.

In 2024, a total of 129,293 inoculations were administered in the Region, 7,434 more than in 2023 (121,859), corresponding to an increase of 6.1%.

Under the Regional Immunisation Programme (RIP) 60,353 inoculations were administered, representing a 12.0% rise compared with 2023 (53,888). The tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccine accounted for 18,017 inoculations, an increase of 17.9% from 2023 (15,282). A total of 5,935 doses of the HPV9 vaccine were administered, a 6.0% rise compared to the previous year (5,597). The Pn13 and Pn23 vaccines, targeting Streptococcus pneumoniae infections of 13 and 23 serotypes respectively, recorded lower numbers in 2024 (5,789 and 994, respectively) compared with 2023 (6,653 and 1,636).

In 2024, Extra PRV inoculations totalled 66,560, corresponding to a 2.1% decrease from the previous year (67,971). A total of 45,297 VAG Tetravalent vaccines were administered, 3,646 more than in 2023. The VAG Tetravalent (regular dose) accounted for 55.7% of the Extra PRV vaccines (37,062), while the VAG Tetravalent (high dose) represented 12.4% (8,235).

As for other immunisations and tests, there was a 33.0% increase, rising from 1,789 in 2023 to 2,380 in 2024. This increase was mainly driven by a higher number of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine doses administered, with 507 more given in 2024.
