DREM releases "In Focus" with statistical indicators related to the sea for the Autonomous Region of Madeira

On the National Day of the Sea, November 16^th, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases for the second consecutive year, a compilation of indicators about the Autonomous Region of Madeira related to the sea. These indicators can be found in the different thematic areas of our website. In this "In Focus" there are data on: fisheries, aquaculture, the International Shipping Register, cruise ships, yachts in marinas, maritime transport of passengers and goods, blue flag beaches, federated athletes in sports related to the sea and tourist entertainment enterprises with sea activities. The data from the Satellite Account of the Sea of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, released in 2020, is also mentioned. This was a pioneer project at a world level since the Portuguese autonomous regions were the first regions to have this important tool.

The main conclusions of the study are summarised below:

• Ocean Satellite Account – Ocean Economy represents over 10% of the Region's economy;
• Fishery – Landed catch increased by 6.7% in 2021;
• Aquaculture – Output exceeded 1,000 tonnes in the last three years;
• International Shipping Register – Sharp growth in the last nine years;
• Cruises – Recovery in 2021 was only partial;
• Maritime Transportof Goods – Unloaded goods grew compared to 2020, but dropped vis-a-vis 2019;
• Maritime Passenger Transport – Madeira-Porto Santo Line with growth of 6.9% in 2021;
• Blue Flag Beaches – 16 beaches in RAM received this award in 2021;
• Federated Sports – Number of federated athletes in sports related to the Sea reached a peak in 2009;
• Tourist entertainment enterprises with sea activities – Number of enterprises with a growth in 2021.

DREM releases dashboard on Statistics related to the Sea

Following the policy of modernization of statistical dissemination, DREM releases during today a dashboard for statistics related to the Sea, which combines data from several of the areas mentioned above, allowing a quick view of the different indicators.
