Overdue loans ratios decreased compared to the previous quarter
According to data provided by the Bank of Portugal, at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2022, the balance of the volume of loans granted to non-financial corporations (NFCs) was 2.0 billion euros, a decrease of 79.7 million euros vis-a-vis the end of September 2021 and a drop of 29.0 million euros compared to June 2022.
The ratio of overdue loans for this type of corporation increased by 0.6 percentage points (pp) compared to September 2021, standing at 2.5% at the end of the reference period, and, compared to the end of the previous quarter, there was a decrease of 0.1 pp.. At a national level, the overdue loan ratio remained unchanged from the previous quarter (June 2022) and decreased by 0.2 pp in year-on-year terms, not exceeding 2.4% at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2022. The amount of non-performing loans within the scope of non-financial corporations, headquartered in the Region, stood, in the reference period, at 50.3 million euros (-2.6 million euros compared to last June and +10.7 million euros compared to September of the previous year).
The percentage of borrowers in the NFC sector with overdue loans, at the end of September 2022, was 14.8%, which means that this indicator remains below the national average (14.9% in the same period) since July 2020.
In the households and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Families (NPISH) sector, there was a year-on-year decrease of 175.4 million euros in the balance of loans granted, amounting to 3.1 billion euros, at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2022. When comparing the balance with that of the previous quarter, there is an increase of around 22.3 million euros. 72.6% of that balance referred to the housing segment and the remaining 27.4% to consumption and other purposes. It should also be noted that these two segments performed differently between September 2021 and the same month in 2022, i.e. while housing loans rose by 68.4 million euros, consumer and other loans fell by 243.9 million euros.
With regard to overdue loans in the housing segment, they were around 9.0 million euros, representing a ratio of overdue loans of 0.4%, thus maintaining the historic minimum compared to the available series, which began in March 2009. This percentage is slightly above the national value (0.3%). Between September 2021 and September 2022, the overdue housing loans ratio decreased by 0.3 pp in the Region.
The number of borrowers in the Household and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households (NPISH) sector rose compared to the previous quarter to 101.1 thousand, with around 44.4 thousand borrowers with housing loans and 84 .7 thousand with credit for consumption and other purposes. Compared to September 2021, there was an increase of 1.0 thousand, 0.1 thousand and 1.3 thousand borrowers, respectively.
