In March 2017

Contrary to national trend (-0.2%), overnight stays in Madeira’s hotel industry increased by 3.1%. Total revenue went up by 10.8%

Initial estimates for March 2017 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+3.1%), total revenue (+10.8%) and lodging revenue (+9.9%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at -0.2% in nights spent, 9.9% in total revenue and 8.6% in revenue from accommodation.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists  were -1.6% and +3.6%, respectively. The result in the national market was probably influenced by the calendar effect associated to the Easter period, which in 2016 occurred in March while in 2017 it was celebrated in April. The German (+7.3%) and French (+4.6%) markets had a positive performance, while the British market dropped by 2.3%.

In the first three months of 2017, the overnight stays increased by 4.5% when compared to the same period of 2016, while the growth in total revenue (+9.0%) and lodging revenue (+9.4%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 69.3%, 3.8 percentage points higher than a year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +11.5%, increasing to € 49.15.

More rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses

The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first three months of 2017 stood at 22,382 (up by 12.3% compared to the corresponding period of 2016). 84.4% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and UK. 65.6% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and similar, 23.2% by tour operators, and the remaining 11.2% by the golf courses themselves.

Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports decreased

According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 139,233 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted  in the January to March 2017 period, a 18.5% decrease when compared to the previous year.
