In June 2017

Total revenue and overnight stays in Madeira’s hotel industry increased by 13.2% and 1.7% year-on-year, respectively

Initial estimates for June 2017 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+1.7%), total revenue (+13.2%) and lodging revenue (+12.2%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at +8.0% in nights spent, +18.3% in total revenue and +20.3% in revenue from accommodation.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 721.2 thousand. Total revenue and revenue from accommodation reached 39.4 and 24.6 million euros, respectively.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that for the reference month the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were -8.9% and +3.3%, respectively. The German market grew by 2.6%, while the British market rose by 1.3%.

In the first half of 2017, the overnight stays increased by 2.6% when compared to the same period of 2016, while the growth in total revenue and lodging revenue (+9.2% in both cases) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 79.2%, up by 1.2 percentage points from the year before remaining the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +11.0%, increasing to € 56.32.

More rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses

The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first half of 2016 stood at 37,349 (+12.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2016). 78.8% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and UK. 59.8% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and similar, 24.8% by tour operators, and the remaining 15.4% by the golf courses themselves.

Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports decreased

According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 232,634 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in the January to June 2017 period, a 17.5% decrease when compared to the previous year.
