Overnight stays in Madeira’s hotel industry increased by 1.3% year-on-year
Initial estimates for August 2017 show an increase in the tourism indicators, with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+1.3%), total revenue (+6.3%) and lodging revenue (+7.1%).
At the country level, the rates of change stood at 3.2% in nights spent, 12.3% in total revenue and 13.2% in revenue from accommodation.
In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 827.3 thousand. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation reached 47.8 and 31.9 million euros, respectively. These figures represent new historical maximums for Madeira’s hotel industry.
Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by foreign tourists and the Portuguese were 2.3% and -4.2%, respectively, compared to August 2016. The British (+2.1%) and French (+1.1%) markets had a positive performance, while the German market dropped by 0.6%.
In the first eight months of 2017, the overnight stays increased by 1.8% when compared to the same period of 2016, while the growth in total revenue (+8.3%) and lodging revenue (+8.8%) was more pronounced.
The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 82.8%, dropping by 0.3 percentage points from August 2016 but remaining as the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.
The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +5.9%, increasing to € 70.39.
