DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2017 and updates the respective Time Series (1976-2017)

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2017 and at the same time updates the Time Series (1976-2017) for this statistical area. The tables with data for 2017 were also updated.

The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:

Accommodation establishments (total)

- In 2017, the number of overnight stays, considering all types of establishment, stood at 8.4 million, up by 5.5% over 2016. The residents in Portugal generated a total of 949.3 thousand overnight stays (+3.6%), while non-residents accounted for 7.5 million (+5.7%).

Hotel establishments

- In hotel establishments, there were increases in overnight stays (+1.8%), total revenue (+7.4%) and lodging revenue (+8.5%).

- The main markets were the UK (25.5% of the total bednights), Germany (24.6%) and Portugal (10.7%). The British market dropped by 1.6% and the German market rose by 2.0%. The UK  maintained the status of most important market.

- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 69.6%, up by 0.4 percentage points from 2016.

- The average length of stay decreased from 5.4 to 5.2 nights between 2016 and 2017.

- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was €51.18 (up by 7.7% from 2016).

Rural tourism

- In rural tourism, the main indicators showed an increase. Bednights grew by 37.4% while total revenue rose by 84.4% and lodging revenue by 44.6%.

Local lodging

 - The indicators of the local accommodation establishments showed a very pronounced growth in 2017, with bednights increasing by 55.8% to a total of 747,902.

Golf

 - The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2017, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 67,219 (+11.1% compared to 2016). This activity generated 2.8 million Euros (+19.9%). 75.5% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and the UK. 57.1% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and the similar, 25.5% by the tour operators and the remaining 17.4% by golf courses themselves.

Movement of passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports

 - According to the data provided by the Ports authority, 537,532 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in 2017, increasing by 3.4 when compared to the previous year. The number of cruise ships that visited Madeira decreased by 1.3%, with a total of 293.
