[NOTE: Regarding the monthly publication of Tourism data for the year 2020, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) will keep the model followed in the previous year, releasing an aggregate comprising the hotel sector, rural tourism and local accommodation, independently of the number of beds. In turn, in its releases, Statistics Portugal (INE) excludes local accommodation establishments under 10 beds. In this press release and in the tables published by DREM the overall total for guests and overnight stays is higher when compared to INE’s. For the bed and room occupancy rates and for revenue and personnel costs, the figures of DREM and INE are the same, since the local accommodation under 10 beds is not included in the compilation of these variables.]
In February 2020
Tourist accommodation sector in Autonomous Region of Madeira maintained a positive trend
Initial estimates of tourism accommodation for February 2020 show an increase in the number of overnight stays (+8.4%), total revenue (+8.1%) and revenue from accommodation (+9.4%). It must be taken in account that these positive results were influenced by the Carnival celebrations, which in this year took place in February and in the previous one in March, and also by the fact that February 2020 had 29 days and not 28. It should be noted that in February, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were not significant, so the positive trend brought in from January - which interrupted a consecutive 9-month drop in overnight stays - continued. However, in the next release, which will refer to the month of March, the data will already reflect the consequences of the pandemic in the tourist accommodation sector.
Excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, overnight stays increased by 7.1% year-on-year. In the country, on the other hand, overnight stays grew by 14.7%, while total revenue and revenue from accommodation increased by 12.8% and 15.1%, respectively.
In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (considering all local accommodation) stood at 586.8 thousand. Total revenue and revenue from accommodation amounted to 26.6 and 17.4 million euros, respectively.
The overnight stays in hotel establishments grew by 8.5% year-on-year and were responsible for 82.9% of the total, while the overnight stays in local lodging increased by 9.6% compared to the same month of the previous year and accounted for 15.6% of the total. In turn, rural tourism, which represented 1.5% of the total, registered a 3.6% decrease in overnight stays.
Looking at the data broken down by market, the French, British and German markets had a positive performance, compared to February 2019, increasing by 9.2%, 7.3% and 2.1%, respectively. The Portuguese market went up by 42.4%.
Considering the January to February period, overnight stays increased by 4.6% year-on-year, while total revenue and lodging revenue grew by 4.2% and 4.0%, respectively.
The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 52.9%, dropping by 0.9 percentage points over the same month of the previous year, but remained as the highest among Portuguese NUTS II regions. In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 57.4%.
The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of -0.1%, decreasing to € 36.07. The average daily rated (ADR) increased by 5.4% in February 2020 to € 62.86.
