Number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation had the highest value since November 2019
The flash estimate for the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, for the month of July 2021, shows that 119.3 thousand guests were registered, which generated 606.2 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to very pronounced year-on-year changes of +317.9% and +419.3%, respectively. It should be noted that, in July 2020, with the restrictions inherent to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism activity registered only 28,749 guests and about 116,732 overnight stays.
However, comparing July 2021 with July 2019, there is a drop of 11.5% in guests and 26.9% in overnight stays. Noteworthy is the fact that the number of overnight stays in July 2021 is the highest since November 2019.
In the first seven months of the year 2021, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 1.6 million overnight stays (-1.1% than in the same month of 2020). To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 7.4%, a larger drop than at a national level (-2.4%).
In the Region, overnight stays of residents in Portugal increased by 225.7% year-on-year, reaching 188.1 thousand and representing 31.0% of the total, while bednights from foreign residents went up by 608.9% compared to July 2020, standing at 418.1 thousand. Compared to July 2019, the change in overnight stays by residents in Portugal was +58.9%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at -41.2%. The number of guests residing in Portugal was estimated at 47.0 thousand and the foreign guests at 72.3 thousand.
In the country, in July 2021, overnight stays from residents (share of 59.0%) contributed with 2.7 million and non-residents with 1.9 million. Compared to July 2019, there was a growth of 6.4% in overnight stays from residents in Portugal and a decrease of 67.6% in overnight stays from non-residents.

In the Region, the main source markets of non-residents overnights recorded a strong recovery in terms of overnight stays when compared to the previous month (+85.6%). The United Kingdom market was the one that registered the highest number of nights spent, with 127.7 thousand, followed by France with 47.0 thousand in the reference month. The German market, on the contrary, showed a drop of 32.4%, totalling only 23.9 thousand overnight stays.

In July, 33.0% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector had 79.1% of the establishments with a guest flow (72.3% in June).
