[NOTE: Regarding the monthly publication of Tourism data for the year 2021, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) will keep the model followed in the previous year, releasing an aggregate comprising the hotel sector, rural tourism, and local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. In turn, Statistics Portugal (INE) excludes local accommodation establishments under 10 beds in its releases. In this press release, and in the tables published by DREM the overall total for guests and overnight stays is higher when compared to INE’s. For the bed and room occupancy rates and revenue and personnel costs, the figures of DREM and INE are the same, since the local accommodation under 10 beds is not included in the compilation of these variables.]

In June 2021

Overnight stays continued to show a pronounced growth

The first estimates for June 2021 show that 58.0% of the tourist accommodation establishments recorded a guest flow (70.4% of the total tourist accommodation capacity). Rural tourism had the highest percentage of establishments with guest movement (78.1%), followed by hotel establishments with 71.6% and local accommodation establishments with 56.2%.

In the month of reference, there was an estimated total of 366.4 thousand overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing a very significant increase of 1,749.2% compared to the same month of the previous year (a month in which the movement of guests was practically null, due to restrictive measures implemented under the COVID-19 pandemic). Despite this increase, the number of overnight stays in June 2021 did not reach 50% of the value of the overnight stays of 2019 in that month. It should be noted that, excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, the overnight stays of tourist accommodation increased by 2,091.0% compared to June 2020, a higher value than in the country (230.1%). The total revenue and revenue from accommodation increased at a higher proportion than overnight stays, more precisely by 3,422.1%, and 2,950.8%, respectively, representing, by the same order, 18.6 and 12.2 million euros. In June 2019, in the same order, total revenue and revenue from accommodation were around 39.1 and 24.8 million euros. In the country, total revenue and revenue from accommodation registered, by the same order, a positive change of 301.1% and 284.0%.

Hotel establishments concentrated 78.3% of overnight stays, growing by 2,445.5% year-on-year. Noteworthy is the fact that, in June of the previous year, this segment maintained only 13.2% of establishments open, resulting in 11.3 thousand overnight stays. In turn, local lodging recorded an increase of 838.0%, comprising 19.0% of the total overnight stays, while rural tourism only registered 2.8% of overnight stays, corresponding to an increase of 793.3%.

From January to June 2021, the overnight stays in the Region registered a decrease of 34.4% year-on-year, reaching 965.6 thousand, while total revenue and revenue from accommodation fell by 32.9% and 33.9%, respectively.

In the main markets, there were quite significant increases when compared to the same period of the previous year. The French market grew by 38,216.7%, followed by the British market (+15,855.1%) and the German market (+8,800.8%). The Portuguese market registered +693.6% of overnight stays in 2021 when compared to June 2020. Year to date (from January to June 2021), the British market continued to register the biggest drop, with -74.8% of overnight stays, followed by the German and French markets, with decreases of 59.1% and 19.4%, respectively. The Portuguese market presented, unlike other markets and for the same period, a very significant growth, of 101.7%, compared to the same period of the previous year.

Considering the period between January to June, overnight stays decreased by 34.4% year-on-year, while total and lodging revenue declined by 32.9% and 33.9%, respectively.

The bed occupancy rate, in the reference month, reached 39.9%, growing by 27.7 percentage points (pp) over the same month of the previous year. In turn, the room occupancy rate stood at 43.3%.

In June 2021, the average income per room (RevPAR) was 31.54 euros in tourist accommodation establishments (excluding local accommodation under 10 beds), +345.2% compared to the same month of the previous year and +53.4% compared to the previous month. When compared to June 2019, RevPar continues to register significantly low values, with a drop of 35.7% (49.08 euros in June 2019).

Decrease in the number of rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses in the 1st half of 2020

The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the first six months of 2021, stood at 11,861 (-45.8% compared to the corresponding period of 2020), having generated around 648.7 thousand euros in revenue, -21.3% compared to the 1st half of 2020.  40.0% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Portugal, Germany, and the UK. The golf courses themselves sold 56.5% of the rounds, tour operators 25.3%, and the remaining 18.1% were transacted by hotels and similar establishments.

It is important to highlight that, between January 21st and February 22nd, the three golf courses were closed, due to the restrictive measures to fight the  COVID-19 pandemic.

Very few cruise ships in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira

According to data provided by the Port’s Authority, in the first half of 2021 only 86 passengers in transit were counted, representing a very significant year-on-year drop of 99.9%. During this period, only 3 ships were recorded (-95.6% than in 2020), corresponding to 65 fewer ships than in the first half of 2020.
