Flash estimate - In October 2021, the overnight stays exceeded the value of the same month in 2019
The flash estimate of the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of October 2021 shows that 131.7 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 726.0 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +129.3% and +154.2%, respectively. In October 2020, Madeira’s tourist accommodation establishments recorded only 57.4 thousand guests and around 285.6 thousand overnight stays.
When comparing October 2021 to October 2019, the number of incoming guests and overnight in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 9.9% and 5.8%, respectively. It is the first month since the beginning of the pandemic, in which the number of overnight stays exceeded the record of the same month of the last pre-pandemic year (2019).
In the first ten months of the year 2021, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 4.0 million overnight stays (+62.3% than in the same month of 2020 and -44.1% than in the first ten months of 2019).
In order to have comparability with the data released by Statistics Portugal, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments shows an increase of 157.7%, a more pronounced change than the one recorded at a national level (+139.0%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 99.9% year-on-year, reaching 143.1 thousand and representing 19.7% of the total, while the overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 172.4% compared to October 2020, standing at 582.9 thousand. It should be noted that, compared to October 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +78.0%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at -3.8%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in 2021, was estimated at 41.1 thousand and the foreign guests at 90.6 thousand.
In the country, in October 2021, the domestic market contributed with 2.0 million in overnight stays, an increase of 65.4%. The external markets grew by 216.6% and totaled 3.5 million in overnight stays.

In the Region, and for the month of reference, the main source markets of non-residents represented 80.3% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 167.6 thousand, followed by Germany with 156.9 thousand and France with 41.2 thousand.
In October, 11.5% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the month of reference, the hotel sector had 88.5% of the establishments with guest flow (87.2% in September).
