Flash estimate - In April 2022, historical values were recorded in tourism indicators
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of April 2022 shows that 169.8 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 830.7 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +535.4% and +574.2%, respectively. These pronounced growths result from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism activity in April 2021, having been recorded only 26.7 thousand guests entering and around 123.2 thousand overnight stays.
It should also be noted that the above values of overnight stays and overnight guests, for April 2022, are the highest ever for this month.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, it showed an increase of 633.1%, a sharper change than the one recorded at a national level (+543.2%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 241.3% year-on-year, reaching 157.3 thousand and representing 18.9% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 772.9% compared to April 2021, standing at 673.4 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to April 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +100.3% and the residents abroad were 13.7%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in April 2022, was estimated at 46.0 thousand and the foreign guests at 123.8 thousand.
In the country, in April 2022, the domestic market contributed with 1.9 million overnight stays (+193.6%) and the external markets totalled 4.1 million (+1 435.6% compared to April 2021).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 81.1% of overnight stays. In this set, the German market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 189.3 thousand in the respective month, followed by the UK with 155.6 thousand and France with 71.6 thousand.
In April of 2022, 13.8% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 91.7% of the establishments with a guest flow (87,8% in March 2022).

The detailed results for April 2022 will be released on June 15th of 2022.
