Flash estimate – In the month of September 2022, the overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 25.0% year-on-year
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of September 2022 shows that 171.6 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 960.4 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +32.4% and +25.0%, respectively. Compared to September 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 33.0% and 23.5%.
Although in September 2022 the overnight stays recorded were below the records of July and August of the same year - in which the threshold of 1 million was exceeded - that value corresponds to the highest ever in the month of September and the third-highest monthly record ever.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, there was a year-on-year increase of 20.7%, a less sharp change than the one recorded at the national level (+37,4%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 16.1% year-on-year, reaching 205.9 thousand and representing 21.4% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 27.7% compared to September 2021, standing at 754.4 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to September 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +78.8% and the residents abroad were 13.9%. The number of guests arrivals, resident in Portugal, in September 2022, was estimated at 48.3 thousand and the foreign guests at 123.4 thousand.
In the country, in September 2022, the domestic market contributed with 2.4 million overnight stays (-3,1%) and the external markets (with a share of 68.2%) totalled 5.2 million (+70.7% compared to September 2021).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 78.6% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 214.0 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 185.7 thousand and France with 64.1 thousand.
In September of 2022, 8.5% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 93.8% of the establishments with a guest flow (same value in August 2022).

The detailed results for August 2022 will be released on November 14th of 2022.
