Flash Estimate - In November 2023, the tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year growth of 9.7% in overnight stays
According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the region, for the month of November 2023, an estimated 146.0 thousand guests are expected to have generated 797.0 thousand overnight stays, reflecting year-on-year changes of +9.8% and +9.7%, respectively. Compared to November 2019, there were increases of 57.5% and 45.5%, respectively.
From January to November 2023, overnight stays amounted to around 10.2 million, an increase of +14.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.
For the purpose of comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. According to this method of results calculation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in November 2023 showed a year-on-year increase of 6.2%, a change lower than the national level (+7.5%).
In the region, overnight stays by residents in Portugal increased by about 9.3% compared to the same month of the previous year, totalling around 105.7 thousand (13.3% of the total), while those by residents abroad rose by 9.7%, reaching 691.3 thousand. It should be noted that compared to November 2019, the change in overnight stays by residents in Portugal was +79.9%, while for residents abroad, it was +41.3%. The guests who entered in November 2023 with residence in the country totalled 31.5 thousand, and those with residence abroad, 114.5 thousand.
In the country, in November 2023, the external markets grew by 9.9%, with a total of 3.2 million overnight stays. Overnight stays by residents continued to increase, totalling 1.3 million (+2.3% year-on-year). By region, Alentejo recorded the highest growth (+15.3%), and Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, the lowest (+4.3%).

The first estimated data in the region for the reference month show that the emitting markets of residents abroad represented 86.7% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, the German market recorded the most overnight stays in November 2023, with around 187.7 thousand (+7.9% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 170.1 thousand (+8.1%), and France, with 30.4 thousand (+3.5%).
In November 2023, 15.4% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not record guest movements.
