Flash Estimate - In June 2024, the tourist accommodation overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 7.8% compared to the same month last year
According to the preliminary data for the tourism accommodation sector in the Region for June 2024, it is estimated that 200.4 thousand guests generated 1,049.5 thousand overnight stays, representing positive year-over-year changes of 4.0% and 7.8%, respectively.
The cumulative figures for guest arrivals from January to June 2024 (1,064.7 thousand; +4.8% compared to the same period in 2023) also show growth, as do overnight stays, which approached 5.5 million (+6.6% compared to the same period in 2023).
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds should be excluded. Under this criterion, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in June 2024 showed a year-over-year increase of 3.3%, a positive change similar to the national level (+4.8%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 4.4% compared to the same month last year, totalling approximately 176.9 thousand (16.9% of the total), while overnight stays by foreign residents increased by 8.5%, reaching 872.6 thousand. In this month, guests arriving from within the country totalled 44.7 thousand, and international guests totalled 155.7 thousand.
In the country, in June 2024, overnight stays by residents totalled 2.2 million, an increase of 3.2%, while stays from international markets grew by 5.5%, reaching 5.6 million. All NUTS 2 regions recorded an increase in overnight stays, with the highest increase in the Península de Setúbal (+9.1%) and the Autonomous Region of the Azores (+7.2%), and the lowest increase in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+3.3%) and Algarve (+3.7%).
Preliminary data for the Region for the reference month shows that foreign resident markets accounted for 83.1% of the total overnight stays. Among these, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with approximately 200.2 thousand (+8.1% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom with 189.2 thousand (-2.3%), and France with 95.5 thousand (+19.8%).
In June 2024, 7.6% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not register any guest activity.
