Overnight stays reached a monthly maximum for December, contributing to an all-time annual record
In December 2015, the overnight stays reached a new historical maximum, contributing to an all-time annual record.
Initial estimates for December 2015 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+9.1%), total revenue (+11.6%) and lodging revenue (+13.6%).
At the country level, the rates of change stood at 9.8% in nights spent, 14.6% in total revenue and 16.1% in revenue from accommodation.
Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that for the reference month the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were +22.7% and +7.6%, respectively.
Taking in consideration the results for the year 2015, the overnight stays grew by 5.8%, while total and lodging revenue rose by 9.5% and by 12.0% over the previous year. The overnights stays topped 6.6 million, the total revenue reached 321.2 million Euros and the lodging revenue 204.3 million Euros. The preliminary results show that in 2015, the British market was the most important, followed by the German market (1.6 million overnight stays, in both cases). The residents in France and Portugal generated 673.7 and 642.2 thousand overnights stays, respectively.
The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 45.9%, the highest between the seven Portuguese NUTS2 regions. The annual rate stood at 64.6%, 3.7 percentage points higher than in 2014.
The monthly average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +14.7%, increasing to € 32.32. The annual RevPAR was € 41.23 (+12.4% than in 2014).
More rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses in 2015
The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2015, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 45,314 (+3.2% compared to 2014). This activity generated 2.2 million Euros, up by 3.7% over the prior year. 61.1% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Germany, Nordic countries and the UK. 34.8% of the total rounds were sold by tour operators, 34.0% by the golf courses themselves and the remaining 31.2% by hotel establishments and similar.
Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports increased by 21.8%
According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 576,627 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in 2015, rose by 21.8% when compared to the previous year. Only in 2012, the number of transit passengers was higher (581,661). The number of cruise ships that visited Madeira increased by 9.1% (twenty six ships more than in 2014).
