DREM releases Culture indicators
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website the time series on Culture, Sport and Recreation not only updated with information for 2020 but also expanded with new statistical indicators.
The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly affected the Culture, Sport and Leisure sector due to restrictions imposed by the authorities to control and mitigate it.
Museums with a third of 2019 visitors and art galleries with less than half of the exhibitions
In 2020, the 17 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which met the 5 eligibility criteria of the Museums Survey displayed 54.5 thousand goods and had 72 thousand visitors, down by 66.2% from 2019 (213 thousand). 42.8% of the visitors were foreign (31 thousand) and 11.0% were integrated in school groups (8 thousand).
In 2020, data collected from Survey on Art Galleries and Other Temporary Exhibition Spaces, show that there were 114 exhibitions (down by 56.3% from 2019) in which 546 authors exhibited 3 545 works (6,752 works in 2019), which means a 47.5% drop. This survey took place in the 30 spaces in activity in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Periodic publications with a rise in the number of sold copies
In the reference year, 27 periodic publications were counted in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which produced 885 editions, 5.0 million copies of overall circulation and 3.9 million copies of total circulation, of which 3.8 million copies were sold. Regarding the previous year, the number of copies sold increased by 1.3%.
Cinemas and live shows were the cultural activities most penalised by the pandemic
In 2020, there were 7,683 cinema exhibitions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing a 55.7% decrease over the previous year. The number of spectators in 2020 went down by 74.7% and stood at approximately 71 thousand, with ticket revenues amounting to 367 thousand euros, a 74.4% decrease over the year 2019. 2020 was indeed a very negative year for this activity that suffered strong repercussions from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year, 445 live shows were performed, with a total of 41.8 thousand spectators, of which 24.9 thousand paid for the ticket, generating receipts of 218 thousand euros. Compared to 2019, the number of shows (-66,3%), spectators (-90.1%), tickets sold (-65.0%) and the revenue (-76.8%) decreased.
In the botanical gardens and aquariums of the Region, 248.3 thousand visitors were counted in 2020, the majority of which were from foreign countries (70.9%). The number of visitors dropped by 65.3% from the previous year.
Share of Local administration expenditure on culture and sports activities was the lowest in the last five years
According to the 2020 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration”, the share of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities stood at 5.0%, having decreased by 1.4 percentage points from the previous year. The expenditure in those activities dropped by 21.8% to 9.4 million. Of this amount, 73.4% was destined for culture (EUR 6.9 million) and 26.6% for sport (EUR 2.5million). It should also be noted that the share of expenditure on culture concerning the total expenditure of the Regional Councils was 3.7%, while in the case of sport it did not exceed 1.3%.
By areas, and in the case of cultural and creative expenditure, "Performing arts" stands out, accounting for 35.8% of total expenditure in culture (EUR 2.5 million), followed by "Interdisciplinary activities" with 21.1% (EUR 1.5 million) and "Libraries and archives" with 18.5% (EUR 1.3 million). In the case of expenditure on sport, the most noteworthy were those relating to "Sporting activities", which corresponded to 43.0% of total expenditure on sport (EUR 1.1 million) and "Sports associations", which represented 36.8% (922 thousand euros).
