In 2013,
Number of museums, art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces increased; local administration expenditure on culture and sports as share of total expenditures decreased
In 2013, there were 17 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, two more than the previous year. The number of visitors stood at 192.5 thousand, up by 27.3% compared to 2012.
In the 3 botanic gardens and aquariums (the same as in the previous year), 589.2 thousand visitors were counted (2.6% more than in 2012).
Data collected from the art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces survey show that 259 exhibitions with 7,509 pieces (7,209 in 2012) took place in the 35 spaces in activity in Madeira.
In the reference year, 33 periodic publications were counted in Madeira which released a total of 9.7 million copies (12.8% more than in 2012).
10,569 performances were recorded in Madeira, decreasing by 41.2% compared to 2012. The number of spectators was 196,419 (-28.5%) generating box office revenues amounted to 1 million euro (-26.0%).
According to the 2013 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration” the percentage of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities stood at 3.9%, 2.5 percentage points less than the previous year. This decrease was not only due to the decline in the expenditure in cultural and sports activities but also because of an increase in the denominator (total expenditure of the local administration). Of the 7.8 million spent in cultural and sports activities, 78.4% of that total was destined for culture and 21.6% for sport.
