Number of visitors to museums, botanic gardens and aquariums increased; more performances and spectators in Madeira’s cinemas; local administration expenditure on culture and sports decreased
In 2014, 19 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira ( RAM ) met the eligibility criteria of the Museums survey (17 in the previous year). The number of visitors stood at 258,000, up by 34.1% compared to 2013.
In the 3 botanic gardens and aquariums (the same as in the previous year), 611.3 thousand visitors were counted (+3.8% than in 2013).
Data collected from the art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces survey show that 286 exhibitions with 5,550 pieces (7,509 in 2013) took place in the 35 spaces in activity in Madeira.
In the reference year, 28 periodic publications were counted in Madeira having been released a total of 10.4 million copies (down by 4.2% from 2013).
16,108 performances were recorded in Madeira’s cinemas, a 52.4% year-on-year increase. The number of spectators was 216,680 (+10.3%) generating box office revenues of 1 million euro (+5.9%).
According to the 2014 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration” the percentage of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities stood at 3.7%, down by 0.2 percentage points from the previous year. Of the 6.5 million spent in cultural and sports activities, 77.1% was destined for culture and 22.9% for sport.
