Official figures show that the natural change remained negative, but improved compared to the year-ago period

Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that in the first half of 2017, the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a negative natural change (-395 persons), since the number of live births in this period (915) was smaller than the number of deaths (1,310). In the same period of 2016, the natural change had also been negative (-443 persons, the difference between 902 live births and 1,345 deaths).

In the first six months of 2017, two deaths under 1 year were counted and no dead foetuses were reported.

There were also 361 marriages, up by 27 (+8.1%) from the same period of 2016.
